What matters during a newborn session

Good photographs matter, but so does how the session feels while we make them. New parents have enough to think about, so I keep the booking direct and explain what happens before I arrive. I bring professional lighting, wraps, props, selected outfits and backdrops. You do not have to buy a collection of things or turn your home into a studio.

There is no fixed pace that every baby has to follow. We make room for feeds, settling, nappy changes and a cuddle when needed. I take care with how the baby is handled and positioned, and I do not ask parents to continue with a pose that feels uncomfortable. The session should work around your baby and your family.

Photographs that include the family

Some parents want close portraits of their newborn; others want photographs with both parents, siblings or a grandparent. We can plan for a mixture. If older children are joining in, it helps to keep their part relaxed and fairly short. They can come and go while we make the baby portraits, which is often easier than asking them to wait quietly for the whole session.

My own experience as a father of five has taught me that family life rarely runs to a neat schedule. I keep communication straightforward and focus on what we can do on the day.
